Canada Post tracking numbers do not update...what to do?

i have recently been selling stuff on ebay and while most people seem to have received their items, one person claims to have not received it (they live in england if it matters) and they opened a dispute on ebay. the problem is that all the tracking numbers do not update for me, they all say: "Order information received by Canada Post" regardless of whether the packages have been delivered or not, and they don't update even after weeks have passed.

i know that people have received their items since they leave me positive feedback so i am sure the items are being delivered.

i need advice on what to do...i am going to call canada post when they re-open but i have a feeling that they will just say that they have access to the same information that is being displayed online. any suggestions?

If you ship to the US Canadian tracking numbers can usually be looked up on the USPS site and the delivery information will be there. The delivery info may or may not get fed back to the Canada Post site. So in the case of an item going to the UK try and look up the tracking number on the Royal Mail site. I suspect though that it has not been delivered.

You are of course aware that if you shipped to the UK by surface mail the delivery runs about 6 - 8 weeks and if by air it's about 10 days - might be longer because of Christmas. You don't state how or when you shipped the item.

Try the tracking number on this website http://track.royalmail.com/portal/rm/tr ... track_home

But we need more information on your package.

1. What service from Canad Post did you use?
2. How did you ship it? Via mailbox or at the post office?
3. When did you ship it?
4. What does the above website say when you enter the tracking number?

sorry, i guess i left out important details...
the package was shipped nov. 03 and i dropped it off at the post office. the above website says "The reference number does not use the correct format. Please check and try again."
it was shipped via international letter post, so i guess that's surface mail.

Call up the Canada Post 1-800 number and tell them it's not updating, or go into the Shoppers that you shipped it out in (if you did it like that) and find out why your tracking number isn't working.

well i have a hunch that it's "normal" that the tracking number isn't updating since it's been occuring with all the other packages i have sent out with surface mail...i'm going to call anyway when they re-open i just want to have a plan going in. i think your idea of heading to shoppers is also worth a try, thanks

Shoppers doesn't get involved in tracking issues (they don't get paid for it), they'll just refer you to the 1-800 number.

I'm not sure what you mean by "international letter post" unless you're referring to Small Packet, but there are no tracking numbers issued for Small Packet unless that's changed recently.

Nov 03 to now is about 7 weeks, within the 6-8 weeks delivery window i would expect for surface mail to the UK, especially considering this is winter (bad weather) and the Christmas rush season at that. Canada Post can sort out the issue of the tracking number for you and whether or not its been delivered but other than that they won't do anything for you. If the item's insured you have to wait 60 days or so before you can even put in a claim for it and at that point they'll actually start to look for it for what that's worth.

In my opinion the item is almost certainly still in transit but there is absolutely nothing that you can do to counter the eBay dispute other than stall for time and hope it arrives real soon.

You might want to reconsider selling outside of North America because of the transit time. Air mail is fast but generally far too expensive and foreigners will simply think you're cheating them. Surface mail takes forever and you get into these kinds of disputes. When foreign buyers would contact me over "where is it?" I would spend a lot of time referring them back to my originally quoted delivery time for the UK of 6-8 weeks and pointing out that there was still time yet and asking them to be patient. The goods always did arrive and in the meantime because of the effort I put in explaining things no one ever filed any disputes against me. But it was just a hassle and it was easier to just stop selling to the UK. If you are going to sell International you had better put in the effort on Canada Post's web site understanding the different categories of shipment, costs and transit times. And I mean real life transit times, not the optimistic stuff Canada Post lists. Communicate to the buyers up front what they're looking at and you'll head off a lot of the problems down the road..

International letter post is for regular envelopes with no tracking, unless you registered it.

If you want real tracking, you'll have to pay for a courier service. Descriptions above are par for regular mail.

Canada Post tends to be incredibly lazy with actually scanning stuff from what I've seen. The message "Order information received by Canada Post" means the seller printed off a shipping form and probably put it in a drop-off mailbox to be picked up. Most of the time it's only at the sorting facility that it'll get scanned, or at the post office right before it goes out for delivery.

Even if it looks like a tracking number, you need to pay for it to see information.
Xpresspost has it. The cheapest shipping does not.
And canadapost will not update you with info until it is delivered.
They'll tell you if it was delivered or not.
It happened to me.

I sold on eBay. The buyer ripped me off by disputing the charge
and saying he never got it.

This is correct and answers all the questions in this forum. CanadaPost is not UPS, and doesn't have point-to-point updates for every location it is moved to. Majority of their services have Delivery Confirmation, which confirms (via tracking number) that the delivery has been made the day the package gets delivered. The tracking number doesn't do anything else.

CanadaPost's cheapest shipping method is their Light/Small Package USA/International service which does -not- have delivery confirmation (not availabe for in-country deliveries so that's a good thing). Do not use this service unless it's to someone you know because you can easily get scammed for selling stuff using this delivery method. Besides, it's only very slightly cheaper so don't do it.

Anyway, some deliveries take a while because of customs. As long as you have a tracking number for some delivery confirmation, you are safe from getting scammed because it will eventually update before dispute start deadlines (30 days from expected delivery date). Moral of the story, don't cheap out on $1-2 :( . If your buyer wants more information, tell them they should have paid for a more expensive delivery service.

I ordered a guitar from the USA on eBay on Monday April 16, 2012. It was sent by the seller USPS International Priority Shipping. While it was in the USA, it moved quickly and efficiently and got to Canada Customs in Vancouver BC by Friday April 20th, 2012. All was just great UNTIL it arrived in CanadaCustoms. The seller told me he had sent many guitars to Canada without any problems. The feedback from other customers of this seller NEVER had a bad thing to say about them. The guitar is actually for my brother as a gift for surviving an illness. My brother will be here this weekend and I'd love to be able to give him this guitar. According to the tracking number, the guitar has been sitting in CanadaCustoms since 1:25PM Pacific Time on Friday April 20, 2012, ever since it arrived in Canada. If I do NOT receive this guitar by Friday April 27 2012, CanadaCustoms will be to blame. I won't say what WILL happen as a result of this delay, but if you work for CandaCustoms ANYWHERE in Canada, you will pay somehow. That ain't a threat, it's a direct promise. Bunch of lazy government employees. Par for the course in Canada, is that a large percent of the cushy high paying Canadian Federal Jobs are had by just arrived immigrants from Pakistan, Africa and Europe. You'd think a true BORN IN CANADA person would have first bids on these incredibly lucrative dog reamin' government jobs. Maybe if a Canadian was actually WORKING there at CanadaCustoms, the job would get done right. Why does my American made product bought from an American in America by a Canadian take longer to arrive in Canada than in Australia? I'm not happy one bit about CanadaCustoms ********. If I don't get this guitar by Friday May 4 2012, the $58,000 per year they get for...whatever at CanadaCustoms won't nearly be enough. I AM EXTREMELY PISSED. http://forums.redflagdeals.com/images/i ... vil-16.png

My memory is kind of hazy but I remember once I had a problem with tracking numbers not working last year so I called Canada Post and they actually did had an update for it that was beyond what I could see myself. I don't know if it would be the same as the other cases mentioned above but I suppose that it wouldn't hurt to call.
